Spinning Surface Ideas
Tired of spinning your tops on an uneven table or desk and having to chase after them? Here are some ideas of other things you can use as a spinning surface for your tops:
  • Spinning Tray. One of the best places to spin tops are the spinning trays we sell, found on the Tops and Accessories page.
  • Old picture frame. Tops spin great on a glass surface.
  • Shadow box. Similar to a picture frame, but with the added benefit of higher walls.
  • Shaving Mirror (it's concave so the top won't fall off of the edge)
  • Euler's Disk Mirror A fun toy called Euler's Disk comes with a concave mirror that works well with tops.
  • Clock Glass. (Take an inexpensive battery powered clock and remove the plastic lens. The inside of the lens is concave and works great as a spinning dish.
  • Etch a Sketch. The drawing area works well for spinning tops.
  • Plate. Depending on the material, plates also work well as spinning plates.
  • Leveled Mirror. Using 3 or 4 small wedges called shims (either plastic or wood) you can create a perfectly level spinning base with a round or square mirror. Of course, with shims you can level just about any surface.
  • CD Case. Just about everyone has an extra cd case lying around. It's also fun to use as an active spinning platter, try not to let the top fall of the edge.
  • Dry marker board. Drill holes on the back side in the corners of the wood frame and put leveling feet in them, which can be found at most hardware stores.
